Clovis, California · Established 1986

Forty growing seasons in one valley.

Evergreen isn't a garden department with a roof over it. It's four acres of roses, shade trees, ponds and pottery, run by the same family since 1986 — and staffed by people who can tell you exactly what survives a Fresno August.

Our story

Started by a horticulture grad who couldn't stop planting things.

Mike Ravicchio opened Evergreen in 1986, fresh out of Fresno State with a degree in ornamental horticulture and a conviction that the Valley deserved better than whatever survived a truck ride from out of state. His mother Dyan came on as partner and bookkeeper. His brother Bryan followed in 1987 and never left.

Nine years later the nursery outgrew its first home on Villa Avenue and moved to Alluvial, where it's been ever since — a working nursery you walk through rather than a store you shop in.

"Grow what belongs here, and tell people the truth about it."

The rose yard

3,500

bare-root roses, every December.

People drive in from Visalia and Madera for it. The bare-root order lands in early winter and the yard fills with varieties you won't find at a big-box store — hybrid teas, floribundas, climbers, groundcovers and tree roses, priced to actually plant a whole bed.

  • Hybrid tea & grandiflora
  • Floribunda & polyantha
  • Climbing & rambling
  • Miniature & patio
  • Groundcover & landscape
  • Standard tree roses

Locals call us the St. Bernard nursery.

Duke and Budd have greeted more customers than anyone on payroll. They'll meet you somewhere between the pottery and the perennials, accept one (1) ear scratch, and go back to supervising.

Well-behaved humans and leashed dogs both welcome.

In the yard right now

Late summer in the Valley.

What's looking good this month — and what to get in the ground before the heat breaks.

Heat-proof color

Portulaca, cannas, echinacea and hibiscus are carrying the beds right now, and they'll keep going until the first cool nights.

Fresh herbs in

New batches of basil, rosemary, thyme and mint arrive through the season — enough to restock a kitchen garden that's been through July.

Plan ahead: bare root

Roses and fruit trees land bare-root in December and January. It's the cheapest, best-selection window of the whole year. Mark the calendar.
